Taru Villas - Mawella

Introduction

Taru Villas – Mawella is a private beach property set in lush gardens on the shores of a secluded bay in the fishing village of Mawella near Tangalle. It consists of three self-contained villas but the property must be booked in its entirety. Many of the southern coves are ideal for swimming and surfing during the season from December to April. The Main House has four bedrooms and is set closer to the beach. The Pool House and Kurumba House are both two-bedroom villas set in the gardens. The villas have timber roofs, polished cement floors and verandahs that let you enjoy the tropical sun and the ocean breeze. The interiors are tastefully decorated with a blend of Dutch period antiques and contemporary touches. Mawella is ideal for a family holiday, friends travelling together – or even a special celebration.

Accommodation

Main House: Consists of four air-conditioned double rooms furnished with four-poster beds. Ensuite bathrooms have twin vanities and open air h/w showers. The master bedroom has a private, walled courtyard with a plunge pool. Up to eight guests can be accommodated in the Main House.

Pool House: Has two double air-conditioned rooms furnished with four- poster beds, storage and desks. Ensuite bathrooms have open-air h/w showers. Four guests can be accommodated here.

Kurumba House: Has two double bedrooms, complete with a/c, ensuite bathrooms and a living space. The villa includes a kitchette as well as a private pool and works well for a small family or a group of 4.

Facilities

Main House: The spacious living and dining area opens to a front verandah with sea views as well as a back verandah alongside gardens scattered with tropical trees that attracts many birds and monkeys. The dining room is furnished with an eight-seater table. There is also a pantry equipped with fridge, stove/oven, microwave, kettle, crockery and cutlery etc. Other facilities in the Main House include a TV, DVD player, DVD library and CD player.

Pool House: The Pool House is smaller and is set further back into the gardens and overlooks the swimming pool. The dining table comfortably seats four people. The living and dining room open out to a wide verandah overlooking the pool. There is a fridge and a small kitchenette.

The swimming pool and gardens are shared by both houses. The complex has a separate main kitchen where the staff generally prepares all meals and a fully equipped laundry room which can provide services at an additional cost. The cook prepares Sri Lankan cuisine and western dishes. Housekeeping staff live on the premises and look after both houses. A night security guard is provided. The beach right in front of the villa is good for swimming and boogie boarding during the season.

Location

Tangalle can be reached via the south coast or coming from the hill country via Wellawaya. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about 3.5 hours via the Southern highway. Avoid road travel and hop on board a sea plane from Colombo which lands less that 1 km away from the villa. There is also the option of taking a connecting Sri Lankan Airlines flight from Colombo’s International Airport to Mattala Airport in Hambantota. This is a 30 minute flight. The drive from Mattala Airport to the Mawella Villa is only 1.5 hours.
