Introduction
Sri Lanka’s Deep South is a region of low rainfall and low population and the area has escaped heavy tourism. That gives Rekawa Beach an escapist feel and a resort that most typifies this character is Omia – an expansive and natural place which tumbles down a coastal hillside towards a beach garden and, just beyond it, an oft-deserted beach. Omia stretches over two acres and is a place of few fripperies, but the simple pleasures of this remote setting have inspired a good deal of affection. Barbara is a congenial host, committed to giving guests a relaxing stay. Choose Omia to relax and soak up a blissful, uncluttered lifestyle. If such simplicity is your priority, and you want it to be backed up by good food (fish dishes win particular praise),a nice pool and well-appointed rooms then Omia is worthy of consideration. No crowd, no busy roads, no pollution. Allow time to tick by and forget the troubles of the world.
Accommodation
There are eight welcoming rooms, meticulously cleaned. All have the advantage of being in a single-storey, stand-alone building, so maximising privacy and tranquillity. There are six Sea View rooms cut into the hillside and two Pool Bungalows, at a lower level and as the name suggests most convenient for the swimming pool. All rooms are a good size and have an attractive sit-out area, a/c, tea and coffee facilities, a safe, desk, hair dryer and an attractive bathroom with shower. To underline the commitment to an undisturbed atmosphere, there are no televisions. Omia also has a “no plastic” policy.
Facilities
A spacious pavilion at the higher entrance level is the social hub, serving as a restaurant, bar and reception area. Fresh, home-baked bread is a nice way to begin the day and the food is often praised: fresh and flavoursome. The restaurant is open all day. The swimming pool at the lower level is a very good size for this area. The beach is unspoiled, although the sea is typically rough with undercurrents here so safe swimming options are quite rare: the owner can advise on places to go in the vicinity. Meditation and massages are also available and there are board games in the bar. Safari trips can be organised to Yala game park, which is less than two hours away, and Uda Walawe, to the north and even closer.
