Nooit Gedacht

Introduction

Nooit Gedacht is one of Sri Lanka’s great heritage properties – certainly one of its greatest budget heritage properties. The property was built in 1735 by a Dutch Governor and still retains some original Dutch architectural features. It is a spacious place resonating with history, an oasis of peace seperated from the lively Unawatuna beach by a large hillock, and its beautiful gardens which invite a variety of colourful birdlife. Stone paths covered with a canopy of trees create an enchanting walkway between the rooms.

Accommodation

There are three types of room at Nooit Gedacht, Standard, Superior and Governor's Room. Standard Rooms can be excellent value and are in good condition, if a little small, but we recommend the other two categories:

Superior Rooms: located in the newly-built wing next to the main pool, these rooms are spacious and have lake or mountain views. Rooms are either double or twin and all have a private terrace or veranda and a mini bar.

Governor’s Room: decorated with antique furniture and a four-poster bed, this large room is separate from the other room complexes and has its own private outdoor dining area.

All rooms have A/C and a fan, an ensuite bathroom with h/w shower and mosquito nets round the beds.

Facilities

Nooit Gedacht has two swimming pools, a gymnasium, outdoor snack and drinks bar, loft library and an Ayurveda centre with a range of spa treatments - yoga and meditation classes can be arranged on request. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, although its quality is unpredictable. The restaurant is in the heritage section of the property serves a range of Eastern and Western cuisine and uses fresh ingredients grown in their own garden. There is also a laundry service.

Location

Nooit Gedacht is just off the main road from Galle to Unawatuna. Galle Fort is a ten minute drive away and the beach is a short walk from the hotel. About 2.5 hours from the airport.
