Introduction
Kulu Safaris, the pioneers of mobile tented safaris in Sri Lanka, are a respected wildlife company. Discuss your wildlife interests in advance and, whether birds, leopards or elephants, the Kulu team will personalise your game drives and take you on routes where you are more likely to see your favourite animals. The Kulu Safaris camping experience is highly recommended for nature lovers including families with children. A minimum stay of two nights is highly recommended.
The Kulu Safaris experience begins with lunch and an afternoon game drive towards 3.00 pm. Once back at the camp, while you relax and change, the Kulu team gets ready for the evening. Hurricane lamps are lit, tables are arranged under the trees, and finally, a sumptuous meal is served around a crackling bonfire. After a rewarding day, retire to your simple but comfortable tent while the sounds of the jungles lull you to sleep. Next morning guests can opt for a dawn game drive or choose to relax on a hammock and soak in the atmosphere.
Kulu Safaris offers an all-inclusive rate which includes accommodation, all meals and snacks; all beverages including tea/coffee, bottled water, soft drinks, one bottle of wine per couple /per night, a limited number of beer and local liquors; park entrance and tracker fees; and two game drives per day. If guests are interested in going on a private game drive accompanied with a naturalist an additional supplement is applicable.
Kulu Safaris follow a strict eco-friendly policy and avoids the use of plastics; uses solar energy for lighting and ensures that all waste material is removed from the campsite. Guests are encouraged to use water sparingly and are educated on wildlife conservation.
Accommodation
The campsite consists of five imported, waterproof, canvas tents (10m x 6m) raised above ground on wooden platforms. Interiors have twin or double beds, dressing table with mirror, luggage rack, mosquito net, torch and umbrella. A private verandah has camp chairs and hammocks. Attached bathrooms have w/c, sink and shower (hot water on request, although the climate makes this unnecessary for the vast majority).
Facilities
Sri Lankan cuisine, BBQs, and snacks are prepared in Kulu’s kitchen. Kulu uses bottled water for cooking and drinking. For the safaris, Kulu uses their own land cruisers that are modified to optimize both wildlife viewing and photography. Game drives take place at 6.00 am and around 3.00 pm until dusk when the birds and animals are best viewed. An experienced team that includes a manager, naturalist, wildlife tracker, chef, housekeeping staff and jeep drivers.
