Introduction
Ashburnham is a 1930’s planter’s bungalow an hour north of Kandy that has been caringly renovated by its British owner into a welcoming and restful holiday retreat. The property has a stunning backdrop of the picturesque Knuckles Mountain Range and is set on a working tea plantation of nearly 100 acres. There is a lot to do on the estate, from trekking and river baths by the estate’s very own waterfall to exploring the Sri Lankan tea experience or simply lazing by the poolside. Ashburnham is a stylish boutique hotel that provides a personalised service. The bungalow can be booked per room or in its entirety and, as well as offering excellent value, has a lighter and more spacious feel than some Sri Lanka tea bungalows.
Accommodation
There are six rooms, dressed in bright, contemporary tones, with showers and ceiling fans.
Ashburnham Suite: Offers a large sitting room with writing desk and sofa and separate bedroom. It has walk-in storage space and bathroom. The bedroom opens onto a small private terrace that overlooks one of the side lawns.
Double Rooms: There are three double bedrooms at Ash. All differ slightly and include four-poster beds and en-suite bathrooms. The Balcony Room boasts views up to the Hunasgiriya range and a private outdoor space. The Sunset Room has a little more space. The Bay Room opens to a private terrace.
Family Room: Offers a double bed and two antique singles, making it particularly suitable for a young family. The room is nearer the back of the house but within easy reach of the terrace and sitting room.
Facilities
Meals are served in the dining room or out on the terrace which looks out over the mountains. A range of both Western and Sri Lankan meals are available as well as complimentary afternoon tea. The living room has a fireplace which is lit by night, a library and plenty of board games. Guests can make use of free Wi-Fi in the dining and living room. The immediate gardens at Ashburnham are beautifully landscaped and have a swimming pool with a waterslide for children and a tennis court. Ashburnham’s extensive gardens are a nature lover’s paradise with numerous species of birds, butterflies, giant squirrels and monkeys hovering about on the tree tops. Enjoy the full tea experience, from plucking tea to visiting the tea factory where the tea is processed. Other activities include a hike to One Tree Hill, where you can hold a picnic lunch, or Ashburnham can arrange a children’s treasure hunt on the estate.
