Why House

Introduction

Why House is a family-orientated boutique hotel just inland from Thalpe on Sri Lanka's Galle Coast. It consists of a spacious main house, a garden villa, and two cottages in three acres of tropical gardens. The architecture is typical of Sri Lanka's south with verandahs, courtyards and high timber roofs. Vibrant interiors with an English feel have plush sofas, antique style furniture, colourful murals and photographs of old Ceylon. Relax by the poolside surrounded by lush tropical greenery. Three in-house chefs specialise in Sri Lankan and international cuisine. 

Accommodation

In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, satellite TV, mini-bar, safe, and wifi. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers.

Main House: The main house is closer to the swimming pool and has a spacious living area with a central courtyard. Three double rooms each have a lounge that can be converted easily into a second bedroom. Furnished with four-poster beds fitted with mosquito netting and open out to private verandahs overlooking the gardens.

Garden Villa: Closer to the dining pavilion, the Garden Villa has four bedrooms opening out to private verandahs. The Garden Villa has interconnecting rooms and well suited for families.

Cottages: Two octagonal cottages, both with two sections - a bedroom and a bathroom connected by a sit-out that opens out to the gardens. Cozy bedrooms with four-poster beds. Spacious, well-designed bathrooms have h/w showers.

Facilities

Meals are served in the garden pavilion, on your own verandah, or by the poolside. Sri Lankan rice and curries and Kottu roti, Thai, Chinese, Malay and typical English treats are served here. Special meals for children are prepared upon request. The chefs are happy to share their recipes withguests. A range of beverages including homemade ginger beer, Ceylon tea, fresh juices, and a range of cocktails are on offer. Non-resident guests can dine at the Why House with prior booking. Other facilities include a large salt water swimming pool set amidst tropical gardens; Ayurvedic and Aromatherapy massages, and yoga with prior notice. Special events are organised on some evening including traditional folk dance and music. High chair and cots are available for children. Baby sitter can also be arranged with prior notice. Why House has a tuk-tuk for guests.

Location

Why House is set amidst tranquil gardens in the village of Mihiripenna, 1 km inland from Thalpe, Galle's upmarket beach resort. Galle’s 17C Dutch Fort is about 15 minutes away. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take about 2.5 hours, or take an air taxi. If you are heading to the hills afterwards, we offer competitive rates on a sea plane service from Koggala Lake to Hatton.
