Introduction
Rangala House is a one of Sri Lanka’s secret escapes, an immensely inviting and individualistic colonial-style four-bedroom bungalow on the edge of the Knuckles range with beautiful mountain views. This converted tea estate bungalow, which consistently gets good reviews, does not seek to offer modern boutique living but has oodles of charm and is in tune with its pristine natural surroundings. The house is framed by the majestic Knuckles Mountain Range and gazes over the tea-covered hills of the Dukwari Estate. Rangala House can be booked exclusively or per room and can accommodate a total of 11 guests. For those without the time to head to the southern highlands, this part of Sri Lanka offers a convenient substitute on a journey between the cultural triangle and Kandy.
Accommodation
Rangala has three ensuite bedrooms in the main building that can accommodate seven guests and a separate Studio in an adjacent building that sleeps four guests. Bedrooms are comfortably-furnished with double or twin beds. Overhead ceiling fans keep the rooms cool and comfortable.
Rooms in the Main Building: Of the three bedrooms, two open on to the veranda and have spectacular mountain views. The third has garden views. One of these bedrooms can be converted into a triple room upon request.
The Studio: The spacious Studio opens on to a private balcony with breath-taking mountain views and is furnished with a four-poster double bed and an additional double (or twin beds) on a raised gallery, accessible via a loft ladder. There is also a lounge equipped with satellite TV and a mini-kitchen with bar and fridge.
Facilities
The living room has a stone fireplace and opens out to a large covered veranda with magnificent mountain views and comfortable lounge chairs. By night, a log fire is lit and dinners are served on the veranda: the resident chef prepares traditional Sri Lankan and international cuisine. There are also several gourmet items available to buy, including sun dried tomatoes, pineapple and papaya and peanut butter and Tahini, prepared with home-grown ingredients. The living room has satellite TV, DVD player, music system, a small library and Wi-Fi. Guests can select movies for viewing from the British owner's wide collection of DVDs. Several board games and a table tennis table are also available. There is also a swimming pool set amid flowering gardens and fruit trees.
